Letting Go Of Dental Anxiety Is Easier Than You Think

Hello and welcome to the online home of Alabama Family Dentistry. We hope to see your smiling face in one of our chairs sooner rather than later. But if the very thought of coming to our Mobile, AL dentist’s office makes you uneasy or downright fearful, we can help with that too. You see, millions of Americans suffer from a condition known as dental anxiety (fear of the dentist). This is a very real and dangerous condition that keeps folks from receiving the high-quality dental care they deserve. But around here we don’t take it personally. We take it seriously. And that’s why we have invested in the tools and the training to be able to offer sedation dentistry as part of our regular services. So, today we want to talk about how Dr. Whatley can get you back in the office for a routine cleaning and examination. Keep reading, and then be sure to get in touch with our team to schedule your next visit!

Your Comfort Comes First

This whole thing revolves around a trusting partnership between professionals and patients. We want you to be comfortable with us and to feel at home in our office. Accordingly, we go to great lengths to provide a friendly and welcoming environment. Plus, we want to ensure that your visit will be pleasant and painless each and every time you pass through our doors. To that end, Dr. Whatley offers two kinds of sedation, and he is happy to set you up with whichever one seems like the best fit for your current needs.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Here’s what you need to know: this is a milder, though faster-acting method of dental sedation. It is a basic thing: you just breathe in through a mask, and you will inhale nitrous oxide (aka laughing gas). Before long you will be overtaken by a feeling of euphoria, and you will relax your fears enough to get the services you scheduled. After we turn it off, you will be ready to go on with your day in a matter of minutes. This is great for patients of all ages and backgrounds.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Need to go deeper? That’s OK! You are in good company on that front. This is a stronger form of sedation dentistry, one that Dr. Whatley has much experience administering. Here’s how it works: an hour or so before your appointment, you will just need to take a pill containing anti-anxiety medication. Its effects can last for a few hours, even beyond your procedure, so be sure to have a ride home in place.
