To Start New Year With a New Look, Get Six Month Smiles Braces

While 2019 might seem like a long way off, it’s just six months away. Many of us make resolutions regarding our appearance to start off a new year, such as losing weight or working out more often. You may decide to start cutting calories and getting more exercise now – or wait until later.

But if you want to start off the year with a straighter smile, see Dr. James Whatley at Alabama Family Dental this month. He’ll determine if you’re a good candidate for Six Month Smiles braces. If you are, you can get straight teeth in about six months. Treatment can be even faster for some folks, which means you may be able to sport a straighter smile at a New Year’s Eve party.

How Do Six Month Smiles Braces Work So Fast?

Six Month Smiles straighten your teeth in much the same way as traditional metal braces. However, the process is much quicker because it focuses only on the teeth that show when you smile, the so-called “social six.” Because of this, they aren’t a good choice for straightening teeth if you’ve got a severely misaligned bite. However, if you’ve got crooked or poorly spaced teeth but a generally good bite, Six Month Smiles braces may be a great option for you!

Benefits of Six Month Smiles Braces

Comprehensive orthodontic treatment that straightens all of your teeth and ensures they come together in a well-aligned bite can take 18 months or more. Since Six Month Smiles targets your front teeth only, the average treatment time is just six months. Some people can get a great-looking smile in even less time.

Six Month Smiles are also much less noticeable than traditional metal braces. They use tooth-colored wire and clear brackets and elastics. In photos, and even in person, many people won’t even notice them!

In part because of the shorter treatment time, Six Month Smiles are often more affordable than either traditional metal braces or clear aligners like Invisalign. They’ll also require you to make fewer visits to our Mobile, AL dentist office for checkups.

Here’s How Six Month Smiles Treatment Works

Your Six Month Smiles treatment starts with us taking impressions of your teeth, which we send to a special production facility. Your customized braces are created there. In a unique process, they’re actually positioned on models of your teeth. This ensures a perfect fit and helps Dr. Whatley position them quickly and comfortably.

The tooth-colored wires have “shape memory” that gently moves your teeth into the desired positions. Unlike traditional braces, no bending of wires is required during treatment. You’ll typically visit our office every month for an adjustment.

Take Care of Your Teeth While Wearing Six Month Smiles

You’ll have less risk of dental problems caused by food becoming trapped in braces, simply because you won’t wear them as long as with more traditional orthodontic treatment. Still, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene habits to avoid decay and even gum disease.

We recommend brushing at least twice a day, for at least two minutes each time. Set a timer on your smartphone to ensure you get in the full two minutes. Be careful not to brush too hard, to avoid damaging your Six Month Smiles braces.

Avoid sugary foods and drinks as much as you can. Sweet beverages are especially troublesome because the diluted nature of sugar makes it easier for deposits of the sweetener to get underneath the brackets and wires of your braces. Rinse your mouth with water after consuming sweet food or drinks if you can’t brush right away.

It’s best to avoid sticky foods and hard foods as much as possible because you risk damaging your braces. For the same reason, don’t chew gum either. The good news is, you won’t have to avoid these treats for long!

Yes, You’ll Need a Retainer

As with any other orthodontic treatment, you will need to wear a retainer after your braces come off to keep your teeth in their newly straight position. We can provide you with either a removable retainer or one that is bonded to your teeth. Dr. Whatley will help determine which one is right for your smile.
