The Sedation Dentistry Revolution

Are you afraid of the dentist? Tons of people are, and really it’s not something you should be ashamed of. But you don’t have to let fear get the best of you; avoiding the dentist due to fear can turn a small problem into a much larger problem down the line.

At Alabama Family Dental in Mobile, AL, we take your dental health seriously, even if it’s be a long time since you’ve visited our office. If you’re afraid of the dentist, we have a solution that can work for you.

Dental sedation can make it easier to undergo dental work, and relieve a lot of your fear and anxiety that you have about a dental appointment. We offer two types of sedation to help serve you better, nitrous oxide sedation and oral sedation.

What is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

You’ve probably heard of nitrous oxide sedation and not even realize it. Nitrous oxide is also called laughing gas. During your procedure, you will breath a mixture of nitrous oxide through a small mask covering your nose. The process is quick and you don’t even realize that it’s happening.

We can also adjust the level of sedation you are receiving during your procedure. We can do this by simply adjusting the amount nitrous oxide in the gas mixture you’re breathing in. This helps to ensure that we can tailor the level of sedation you are receiving to help ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed during the entire procedure.

You won’t actually fall asleep during your procedure while receiving nitrous oxide. You are able to communicate with us during the procedure, and able to respond to directions and answer any questions. But you will feel as if you are in a deep state of relaxation, ensuring you’re comfortable during your procedure.

The best part of nitrous oxide is that the effects wear off almost immediately, meaning that you can drive yourself home after your procedure.

What is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is a prescription sedative that we can prescribe you to take a couple of hours before your procedure. You simply take the pill before the procedure, then relax as we perform your dental procedure. This produce a deep state of relaxation for you, meaning you will need to have some drive you home after your procedure.

This is a great choice is are undergoing a more complicated procedure, or if you feel a deeper feeling of anxiety at the thought of a dental procedure.
